O'siyo Brothers and Sisters!

My congratulations to the students at Pine Ridge High School for taking a public stand against methamphetamine. They took a day of memorial for fellow student Saunie Wilson, who died from a meth overdose three years ago, and turned it into a community awaremenss event.

Those who have read this humble newszine know I lost a friend to meth, so what the students at Pine Ridge High are doing is very close to my heart.

I also have friends I love on Pine Ridge, so I truly pray the actions and words on 'Death to Meth' day will translate to saving others from losing a loved one to this terrible curse from the dark side.

I also pray this day of community awareness at Pine Ridge will become a life saving movement throughout Indian Country.

More I cannot wish for or say.

"Our sacred lands are all that remain keeping us connected to our place on Mother Earth, to our spirituality, our heritage and our lands; what's left of them. If they take it all away, what will remain except a vague memory of a past so forgotten?"---Tamra Brennan, Founder/Director of Protect Sacred Sites & Protect Bear Butte, grassroots organizations

As historian Patricia Nelson Limerick summarized in "The Legacy of Conquest: The Unbroken Past of the American West...
"Set the blood quantum at one-quarter, hold to it as a rigid definition of Indians, let intermarriage proceed as it had for centuries, and eventually Indians will be defined out of existence. When that happens, the federal government will be freed of its persistent 'Indian problem.'"

Once a language is lost, it is gone forever. Of the 300 original Native languages in North America, only 175 exist today. * 125 of these are no longer learned by children. * 55 are spoken by 1 to 6 elders; when they die, their language will disappear. * Without action, only 20 languages will survive the next 50 years.
