O'siyo Brothers and Sisters!

To absolutely no one's surprise, the Bush Administration has labeled the $58 Billion claim by the Indian Trust litigants "absurd".

The US Department of Interior, under successive Secretaries and two different judges, including one hand-picked by the defending US Government, has lost nearly every skirmish in this drawn-out (by the government) lawsuit. Now that it is clear that real judgment in the litigants' favor is nearing, the government is resorting to name calling and finger pointing.

... makes you proud to be an American, doesn't it?

I think it is interesting that the Native American Bank just posted a doubling of profits, while non-Indian financial institutions around the world are flushing down the drain in red ink.

That, along with the soon-to-be-proven-in-court lack of Trust competence by the Department of Interior, does as much as anything to underscore the fact that the US government's original reason for creating the Indian Trust and insisting that the government manage it, claiming Indians couldn't possibly be savvy enough to manage their own money, was and is just one more in a series of lies, more lies and damn lies.

As historian Patricia Nelson Limerick summarized in "The Legacy of Conquest: The Unbroken Past of the American West...
"Set the blood quantum at one-quarter, hold to it as a rigid definition of Indians, let intermarriage proceed as it had for centuries, and eventually Indians will be defined out of existence. When that happens, the federal government will be freed of its persistent 'Indian problem.'"

Once a language is lost, it is gone forever. Of the 300 original Native languages in North America, only 175 exist today. * 125 of these are no longer learned by children. * 55 are spoken by 1 to 6 elders; when they die, their language will disappear. * Without action, only 20 languages will survive the next 50 years.
