George W. Bush wanted to leave a presidential legacy.

He is certainly leaving one in Indian Country... one of hate, distrust and gross mismanagement.

In the shadow of NCAI President Garcia's State of Indian Country address which detailed the pathetic state of Tribal jails, reservation roads and infrastructure and, most especially, woefully inadequate schools that are very much "leaving Indian kids behind", President George W. Bush and his hatchet administration are recommending near record cuts in every facet of the BIA Budget.

Whether it is because he is callous or careless, ignorant or arrogant, what Bush is doing to the Indian constituency of this United States falls well beyond the pale. Needs that will be ignored will, without doubt, lead to death and more destitution to tribes struggling against huge needs and only crumbs to address them. There are not even sufficient funds to chink the cracks that are quickly becoming crevices in health, education and civic needs on the reservations. It is even worse off-reservation
where many Indian Centers are being forced to close.

It isn't like he's afraid to create a debt. He'll roll the bones for a pet project in a skinny minute.

George W. Bush's record-setting THREE BILLION dollar budget gifts the powerful and wealthy life-takers of the world - the military industry - with new bounty, and continues the disgraceful theft of promised resources from those he views as having the faintest voice. Let's prove him wrong and make his party regret they EVER put this sorry mockery of humanity into the nation's highest office.

In this period of elections to replace this lame duck president it is very clear to this writer that George W. Bush does not give the first
damn about Indians or the Indian vote that he is insuring will not be given to his party. But, we are less that 2% of the vote.

If this election is like the last two, 2% is enough to tip the balance.

I hope so. I'm tired of our elders and children serving as door mats.

"Set the blood quantum at one-quarter, hold to it as a rigid definition of Indians, let intermarriage proceed as it had for centuries, and eventually Indians will be defined out of existence. When that happens, the federal government will be freed of its persistent 'Indian problem.'"
