I once had an elder admonish me for not including enough good news.
For a while I made a sincere effort to make the lead article one of good news. Many readers were generous, and shared their own "good news"
stories, which I was most appreciative of, and honored to include those
personal triumphs and positive affirmations.
Unfortunately, the contributions dwindled quickly and hard news demanded inclusion. Soon, it was news as usual.
It is a new year, and there are definitely hard news items that command attention, such as the border issues (north and south), health issues and land grabs by the dominant society. This is also not the first issue of 2008, but it is still the first month; and it seemed like a good idea to offer some positive news items to start your read.
To that end the lead articles include the honoring of a World War II
Veteran by the Smith Lake Chapter House, and a healing lodge offered
as alternative treatment by the Omaha Nation in Oklahoma.
There are still plenty of "hard" news items, but the honoring of an elder and a return to traditional healing of our ills seems a good way to start the news.
While I am at it, please allow me to again extend two invitations.- If you would like words that mean news, new news or something similar
in the tongue of your Nation added to the banner, please send them with their translation to either of the email addresses in my signature below.
- I always welcome original news from readers. Just make sure it is of interest to Indian Country and full of truth.
I also wish to thank everyone who reads this humble offering. Without you reading this ezine to give it purpose, it is just words in the wind.

attempts to intimidate us. The Department of Homeland Security cannot

As historian Patricia Nelson Limerick summarized in "The Legacy of Conquest: The Unbroken Past of the American West...
"Set the blood quantum at one-quarter, hold to it as a rigid definition of Indians, let intermarriage proceed as it had for centuries, and eventually Indians will be defined out of existence. When that happens, the federal government will be freed of its persistent 'Indian problem.'"

Once a language is lost, it is gone forever. Of the 300 original Native languages in North America, only 175 exist today. * 125 of these are no longer learned by children. * 55 are spoken by 1 to 6 elders; when they die, their language will disappear. * Without action, only 20 languages will survive the next 50 years.
