O'siyo Brothers and Sister!

If you read nothing else in this newsletter, please read the letter in Native Justice from Cindy Washakie regarding her brother, Rich.
Take a moment to write the DOC to let them know their neglect of a brother is not going unnoticed!!!

My half-side, the Lovely Janet, saw a redneck comment on a news site. She told the Bubba what she thought, and shares her thoughts as this week's editorial.

This week's article on the Labor Day march to promote racial tolerance in Cortez, CO was run on several news services, including KTAR TV's web site (http://www.news.ktar.com). As many news sites do, this site permitted comments from "registered members." Only one had commented, and his comment was just this: "Lazy Indians: Get Off the booze and get a job."

And this attitude is precisely why the march and its information booths are needed. Most people now understand that it's not acceptable for a man to rape a woman simply because she is female and looks "hot." Yet many, apparently including Cortez's police officials, aren't convinced that it's not acceptable to beat up an Indian, especially if that Indian is drunk.

A police lieutenant is quoted as describing victims as people who "drink just about every day in their lives," and that when "in that condition ... the witneses are not very reliable," to excuse police failure to identify suspects in six assault cases. I Wonder if he'd have the same attitude if an executive were assaulted after he and his friends had enjoyed a three martini happy hour? And I wonder if the town's management would have tolerated it.

I doubt the commenter will learn a thing from the information booths at this march. His bigotry is sealed far too tightly for information to penetrate. But perhaps enough others in town will be convinced that Indians are human, too, and far less "entitled" than they have been led to believe.

It might be useful for them to understand that the power that lights their homes, heats their foods and runs their air conditioners in the summer was provided by Indians who had a job -- mining coal on their reservation, for which they have been underpaid. And this country's nuclear arsenal and nuclear power resources were largely paid for in Navajo lives and misery that extends to this day from mine polution of reservation water sources, for which few have seen even one penny of reimbursement. Get a job, indeed.
