Tribute to Joseph Nathaniel Crick...By Val Crick..Our father’s family was of American Indian descent - whom we suspect were Creek Indians (pronounced Crick) - from Louisiana. Hence our family name. The lineage is traced to Joseph Crick and Mary Crick. They migrated to St. Vincent (via Barbados) in 1873. Joseph Nathaniel Crick was born on January 18, 1909 to Fredrick (Pappy) Crick and Leofreda Roberta (Gussy or Mammy) Crick. He was the last survivor of his siblings which included two brothers and eight sisters...I am trying to trace my ancestry

I liked your articl's about the boarding schools my mother lived in one and then another. Got a picture of her with lots of Indian Kids had her hair chopped off dutch boy cut. she was at one with Nunns said they were mean. She was at one of the bad ones after she got older.Seen a Girl being handed over to a man and her screaming for heip, The Nuns didnt do a thing and she was never seen again. But by reading your articles there were a lot of good ones. With good intentions, I need'd to know that..

I was just browsing the native american web sites or any topic related to our people when I came upon your site. It's quite important and very much enjoyed your factual desxcription of the Federal Government. I worked for the BIA and you are absolutely on target. I was either demoted, transferred or had to endure flyers describing me in the most perverted way, as well as, gossip simply because I was out to assist the tribes with whom I was to assist rise to its status in accordance with congressional mandates to get the Indian people out of poverty and on their own, but it just isn't that way at all. I did, however, enjoyed my GS-12 status and worked diligently to get to the top as a female. Keep up the good work. .. I'm behind you.

I had the opportunity to watch Bury My Hearth At Wounded Knee. I've been enlighten. Can you assist me? I need to know how to register my native american heritage. I'm african american, my great-grandfather was Sioux and great-grandmother part Cree. My grandmother married a man who came from family who were not slaves. Many of my elders are gone and there are few left. This is something I must do before it's too late. My mother is register in the nation. Great sorrow sits today in my heart what I've learned what happened to my people. However, I understand deeply what it means to be Sioux...Thank you,Lisa D. Moore

I think that this web site should be sent to every e-mail in the United States, so that people will remember who this great land belongs to and that is the Indian tribes that were forced away from land that they had lived on all their lives. This subject makes me very upset because you have the whites claiming it is theirs and then you have blacks saying the the whites owe them some of it. But what I am having trouble understanding is, how can you claim something that you have not earned or how can you expect someone to give you something that was stolen in the first place? WAKE UP PEOPLE THIS LAND BELONGS TO THE TRUE AMERICANS. THEY ARE NEITHER WHITE NOR BLACK.

This is my first visit, and i think it is a great web page. It meant alot to read up again on Vernon Bellecourt and the start of AIM. When i was in high school 30 some years ago, i meant vernon bellacourt and ended up writing a final paper on him and about AIM. It has angered me over the years about the mistreatment of our society by the police and our own communities...I was very sad to hear yesterday of the passing of Vernon Bellacourt. He is a man i will remember the rest of my life. What he has done for other people and especially what he has done with his own life....Thanks

What a wonderful Site.i have always taken Interest in the History of American Indians what proud people i would like to appologise for my ancesters in the way they Invaded your beautiful country and the cruelty they inflicted on many innocent people but not forgetting the red coats and kings at the time were also very cruel to its own people even hanging little children for stealing a loaf of bread, the general english people were very poor and very often subjected to torture and many things unspeakable if they did not serve the king or queen.many red coats escaped the cruelty of the kings officers and settled in America and Canada also Married and lived with your people. i would like to end this with an Indian proverb .This we know the earth does no belong to man. man belongs to the earth.all things are connected like the blood that unites one family, man did note weave the web of life he is merely a strand in it,what ever he does to the web he does to himself.may your spirites be with you,

.I think this site is awesome. I have native America ties. some of my ancestors were Indians. I came on here looking for fry bread recipes. A friend of mine, that is Indian, made fry bread a long time ago, and was looking for the recipe, and couldn't find it, then I found it on this site.

I am happy for this site. My grandmother was crow, Blackfoot (I think piegan ?(spelling?)) and Irish...and I have Cherokee blood from my father who was born in NC...I have always been curious about Indian sites. And while I have no intention of tracking down my bloodlines...It's just nice to see more sites...there are some very pretty names here. Thank you for taking the time to compile these....may the Indian Culture not disappear with the elders...Peace & thanks

As a sister and advocate in Native American rights and pending issues I come in request of a favor. Unlike others wanting to name their horses and dogs, I ask for my nephew by marriage, a proper indian name. To give you some history on the youngster his will is strong. His grandfather is a decendant of Quanna Parker, and rightly so. He has a fiery little temper, a HUGE soft heart, and quiet frankly a head tougher than a buffalo. I ask that you help me in this journey to help connect with his heritage. You know me from constant mailings about current affairs within in our people, and that I try hard to help our Brothers and Sisters in need, this time the need is mine. As you know I am Siksika with a given name and truely know the importance of having one unaltered by "white rabbit". I could play around a come up with something cutesy but let's face it our culture has been toyed with long enough as we all know!I know that Quanna Parker was Comanche and took a white wife and that he fought alongside Goyahkla (Geronimo) in many battles. My nephew is twelve years old and his father past two months before he entered this world, leaving his family for his care. we consider the young man a true blessing from the Great Creator. However, he does not have a suitable Indian name and is soon to be coming of age. I have plans to take him to next years SunDance to teach him of our ways. Of course he's no stranger with an Aunt who won't quit praying and preaching. The main reason this is so very important is honestly because my faith in his ability to touch others and to raise proper question where it needs to be raised. As he puts his sweet little arms around me I feel the future of the Native American has hope. I am also reminded of SnowwOwl's nephew and what he said about our future in the children. Please help me in this journey and do not let this fall on covered ears!

Daily I try to make people understand that instead of blaming their forefathers for the fall of the native Americans who so loved, cherished, nourished, and worshiped on this land make it so those we loved and all we've lost doesn't go in vain. TAKE THE TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE IF ONLY ONE FOR EVERY PERSON LOVE WILL WIN! LET NOT THE BLOOD AND TEARS OF OUR ANCESTORS MEAN NOTHING, LET LOVE WIN!.. HEYA!

I have always felt a tie with the native American history as Scotland went through a similar polite ! e.g. highland clearances and the breaking of the clans and traditions ! I don't suggest that the Scottish had it as bad as the native Americans but the fact is the oppression of our spirit is much the same !

I have always had an interest in the peoples who lived and thrived in the part of the country I grew up in, Omaha Nebraska. This is my first, dedicated, trip to learn more. I have read several books and have researched specific incidents in my schooling past, but this is not for a grade. Thanks for spending the time to maintain this web site. I hesitate to ask for additional locations for spending my time, including geopraphic places I can visit. I know how to find places, I was just hoping that their would be a some, shall we say, favorites, or more appropriate locations that would be suggested. I would prefer to avoid touristy places and find the more subdued, less flashy things to enjoy, with solitude

My Mother, now deceased, had told me of a story from her mother's side of her family. There were 2 sisters out in the woods when the Indians came through. One sister hid in a hollow log for days, while the other sister was taken by the Indian Chief, and bore him 3 sons. I wish to find out more of this, if anyone knows anything. My grandmother was from Kentucky, so I'm not sure where the 2 sisters were from. Thank you for this most wonderful and interesting site!

I have long been interested in genealogy and especially what happened to the Pocomoke, Assateague Nations near my home. My family has long insisted that we are of African and Indian descent. My son's father is Cherokee. I am currently tracing my family's history and would like to fill in the blanks. I comment you in telling the true story of the Trail of Tears. While in high school, I got into a lot of trouble because I told my class the story from the Natives' prospective. A law was broken but nothing was ever done to rectify it...If I can be of any assistance, I offer my services.

I visit your site regularly, and I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. As a native woman with Choctaw & cherokee blood in my veins, and granddaughter of Jesse Betsey, a full blooded choctaw spiritual medicine man who is with me in spirit onlly now, I find your site so fulfilling becauce the contents of your site are so informative I have learned so much more of my heritage, because my grandfather passed when i was 8 years old & when he was in the hospital on his death bed [in this life] he would only speak in his native choctaw language I could'nt understand his words but I know he was telling me to never forget where I came from, I want to thank you for keeping this site going so that everyone who wishes to learn about their roots & the plight of all native people. I will continue to tell people about your site and refer them to it.. HEYA!

I love this site! I have a past life as a Lakota and my guide is the man who took me as his woman. I feel the pain of what the white men did (and are doing), even though I am white in this life. I don't feel white though. I feel a deep connection with my Lakota guide and we have a strong bond. It makes me cry to learn of how Native Americans (hope that's right to call you that)are and were treated. It's so wrong. I shall be visiting this site often, to help me gain knowledge. Thank you!!!

Great site. It is great to have this information available. I am seeking more information on the Marias massacre and any who can give me information on those that are survivors would be great. My great grandmother's name was Kate Kuhn and she was born near the date of 1870. She was orphaned to some settlers as an infant after the date of the massacre and little information on her heritage exsists. She did have one uncle who the settlers did know of and she did keep in contact with him. His name however was not passed down but he did live in a place called Nut Mountain Saskatchewan. If this strikes any information for you. It would be great to communicate with you. thanks in advance

I was named after a beautiful native American girl in my mother's English class.. She taught school in Oklahoma in 1939. . I have always loved my name and the fact it was native American, and so unique. . I've never met someone with this name, but I've heard there are a few ladies "out there" who share this lovely name.. I would like to know if there is another meaning beside "fragrant" for Quinna , possibly derived from Quanah...

It may be too late for me. My parents believe they are of Native American ancestry. My grandparents are certain of it. Their parents, however, did their best to assimilate into the rest of society. As did their parents before them. They did their best to hide who they were and where they came from. It may be too late for me. It seems I strive in vain to find the roots of my blood. All of my tries at genealogy are dead ends. The only thing my grandmother has ever told us is, in Spanish, "Somos de los Indios, de los Indios, de los Indios". "We're the Indians, of the Indians, of the Indians". I found that there are DNA testing facilities that can tell the percentage of Native American that a person is, and even what tribe(s) they are from. The thing is, would the Nations recognize a percentage of my blood, as opposed to previous involvement of my family in tribal affairs? My family was shamed into anonimity; therefore, I know not who I am. Why should my children suffer the same fate? Is it too late?

I love my horses and Leotic and her mother are my newest rescue. I also have buffallo whom roam freely in our land with our heard of horses. So I felt a Native American name was very fitting for this little filly. Again I thank you of your site I loved it and will return when I have to name my 7 new 2008 foals of color. Elise

I enjoyed your web page and was searching for the way to say "THE SNOW WHITE DOVE" by Chief Lightfoot of the Cherokee before passing away. He made me his First Lady and I attempted to put a gathering together before his passing. It didn't work out he passed on A Sunday and we held it on Wednsday anyway but the air was so fresh I'm sure he attended. I followed through with my promise to him and he is with me always. Can you tell me the Indian way to say my name and what its meaning is? Please add me to your update list so I can continue on with learning more. I am also 1/2 Cherokee of the Oklahoma Nation...Thank You..Jenny

I find the web site like a breath of fresh air. My grandmother 4 down the line was sioux and came from the lakotta's and brought to Pennisivilina and put in some type of camp. She married into an itliano famly and learn not to speak of who and where she came from. She was beauty inside and out I have been told. For as long as I can remember I have only felt peace outside in the creators world of mother earth. I find human beings to be negitive and postive. I also obsurbe energy like a sponge and try only to stay with postivty. My family has said I have always been able to see the past. Which help me when I began asking question and no one wanted to answer. The only difficult part is I am the lightest of my family I just wish I didn't always see a stranger in the mirror looking back at me because inside I know who I am but my outside don't match.Thank you for brining a voice to the world were people know nothing of this land we live on.

My grandmother was Abenaki. Lived in the Odanak area in the early 1900's. moved to Shawinigan falls about 1908 or so and would up in St Paulin, in the Yamachiche area where she spent most of her life. Had few relatives in that area, but it was fun to be there with her and my granfather, who , in passing, was a Cree.

One of my elderly family members attempeted to do a tree research and was blocked by the government stating listings of the Cherokee were classified. I dont understand this. Now she is gone and I have to start all over. How do I do this?

i enjoyed your site. it is easy to navigate, the information is of interest and enjoyable. I am native, of the Navajo tribe. I always appreciate native sites that are not so political and hateful towards non-natives. War and hatred against non-native is our History, not our future. thank you and good luck.

I really enjoyed your site. It was very informative. Your article about Goyathlay truly moved me. I know you probably hear this a lot, but I am part Native American, but maybe unlike others I'm very proud of my heritage and seek to learn more. My family does not know much as most that did have passed away. I have been told that I'm part Alabama and part Osage. Either way, I have a heavy heart for what the Native Americans have suffered through due to ignorance and pure hatred. I'm raising my children to understand where they came from and to not forget those that came before them. Again, your site has made a great impression upon me that I will take with me my whole life.

Great work; I am a retired Arine Officer and my last duty station was Ft. Huachuca with Army. It dawned on me this was ironical since my Dad was a baby or born in the POW camps when the Apache were removed from AZ. Buried him in the Commanch Grasslands of Colorado 1983. He was over 100 but still riding and moving cattle. Since there are zero records I can not prove heirtage but such is life..
