TRANSLATIONS - PLEASE UNDERSTAND
December 10, 2007
Spirit Hawk ^i^This is a subject, that while maybe of no real great importance, is still an issue that needs to be addressed.
Please understand that I do so to inform, not to chastise.
I have a friend who was contacted by a fellow wishing to give his Hunting Lodge an " Indian Name" honoring his grandfather.
He was upset when informed that it wasn't possible to do and when asked, "Translated into what language?"
What you must realise is that
1) there is not one single "Indian" language, there are many
2) our languages were around long before Columbus set foot on
our soil.
How do you translate a word from English, German, Spanish, French, or what ever, when that word doesn't even exist in our language?
Sorry, just not possible.
Sure, I'm willing to bet that you can find someone that will give you a translation.
That person will also tell you anything you want to hear for their own twisted reasons.
But what they tell you would be false.
Bob, George, John, Alice, Mary, ect. ect, ect. are not found in our languages.
Sorry, just a simple fact.
Now if you look at it like this, take the name Norman.
It's meaning is man from the North.
Man from the North can be translated into Aniyuhnwiya as; Man = a-s-ga-yv ( ah sss gah yuh ) From = a-ni-gi-s-di-ni-dv-le-nv-da (ah knee gee sss dee knee duh laynuh dah ) The = hi-a ( hee ah ) North = u-yu-tlv-i (ooh yuh tluh ee).
So loosely you have the translation of the name Norman.
I'm willing to bet it's gonna take you a while to learn to spell and pronounce it correctly though. lol
But still there are some words of yours that we simply don't have.
So please, for both your benefit and ours, try to remember this when asking for a translation.
And if you do ask, be specific.
What language is it you want?
Don't insult us by saying INDIAN.
Just common courtesy is all we ask.So says, Spirit Hawk ^i^
