LOOSE TONGUES - A Grandfather Story - May 5, 2008

A little boy sat beside his grandfather upon the bank of a beautiful stream. Both were enjoying the beauty the Creator surrounded them with, but the little boy's grandfather could tell that there was something weighing heavily on his grandson's mind.

Knowing his grandson as he did, he knew that given time the boy would tell him what it was.

Eventually, he was proven correct as his grandson suddenly spoke, " Grandfather, there is something happening in our tribe that I just do not understand and it troubles me greatly."

"What is it that troubles you so?" asked his Grandfather.

Looking at his grandfather the little boy softly spoke, "There is a person that is always telling things about others, things that I know are not true, and when this person does speak the truth it is only to tell bad things about others.

The only time this person speaks good of someone, it seems, is when this person stands to gain something by doing so.

I do not understand why someone would do this.

Does this person not understand the hurt and the trouble they cause by doing so?

Does this person not care?"

Grandfather looked into his grandson's eyes and he could see the sincerity of the words his grandson had just spoken.

" Grandson" he answered, " Yes I know of who you speak. Where ever there are groups of people together you will always find someone such as this person.

People such as this person do these things for many reasons, but when all their excuses are brushed aside, you will see that the only thing left is because they are miserable in their own lives.

It gives them a misguided sense of power over those they hurt.

They falsely believe that it also makes them look good in others eyes, that they are somehow better than those they speak of.

Of course you and I know that is not true, for in the end it only makes them appear pathetic and needy."

Grandfather paused a minute, for his grandson to absorb the words he just spoke, and then he continued, " There is something more that you must consider though grandson."

"What is that grandfather" the little boy asked? " What does that say about those who, without just reason, believe what people such as that say about others?"

The little boy thought for a bit and then answered," Try as I might, I can't think of it saying anything good about them grandfather."

Grandfather smiled at his grandson, smiled and said, " Exactly!

Do not judge others unless you are prepared to be judged yourself."
