The exploration of this country and the settling of it's lands was not a very proud moment in history. Although I am of Polish desent, I have tried my very best to get educated in the ways of the "TRUE" Americans. This web site and many others like it have helped me learn the ways of the Native people. Thank you so much and may we all live in peace.

I want to thank you for a beautiful & informative web site! I have always been interested in Native American culture. I have many books about culture, ceremonies, tribal dress & Native American folklore & art. I attend as many Pow-Pow's as possible in Virginia. MY grandchildren, who are part Native American, now enjoy them too!! WE also donate colothing & non perishable goods to Reservations all over the country. I wish the stories & photo's on this web-site could be purchased in book form! But I return to this web site often & enjoy it immensely. Keep up the good work. Thank you so much!

Great site found it quite by chance tonight. I am a spiritualist and have been told several times my main guide (or guardian angel) is a sioux indian. The words oglala and lakota heve been mentioned several times during sittings. He is very young and very tall and I was told once he had a scar on his left cheek, and he has been looking after me since I was born. Naturally being a woman and inquisitive I am trying to find out as much as I can about the Lakota/Oglala indians with the hope that one day I will find out who he is. I have had a passionate love for horses since I could talk and now think that is where the influence has come from as my family have no horse connections. It makes sense that such spiritual people would wish to look after us when they have departed to the great spirit. Thank you for taking the time to create such a wonderful informative web site.

I was directed to your site by a friend who thought I would be interested in the page "Boy Scouts and Indians". Now I see there is much more to look though. I started my interest in the American Indian when I was a Boy Scout in York, Pennsylvania. Belonged to various Indian Scout groups and the Order of the Arrow. Moved to Montana in 1967 to teach school on the Rocky Boy Reservation. For the past 38 years I have built and operated Four Winds Indian Trading Post on the Flathead Reservation. This site looks interesting and I will spend more time looking through all the different departments.

I was researching the meaning of ladybugs for a friend who shares my use of Medicine Cards and my interest in Native American teachings. The Hawk and the Lady Bug story's last paragraphs crystalized my finally understanding my leaving a 22 year marriage, and my newly growing understanding that even I should be not be punished but rather loved for who I am. Thank you for this incredible gift that I will move forward with as the beginning of love for myself! This is one more step as I near the year's end preparation for a Vision Quest in May.

My dad says we have Mohican/Mahican indian in us but how? I can't seem to figure it out. I've looked everywhere. Almost all of my family is from the Mohawk Valley in upstate New York. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a great site offering information on Native American culture without asking for a credit card! As an English pagan looking to rediscover the old ways, there is so much we can learn from you. Your history and heritage is of immense value not only to the North American tribes, but to a much wider audience worldwide. May your journey always continue.

I wanted to see who Mr. Humphries was as I have seen his name on the Daniel Boone series reruns & I am VERY INTERESTED in reading any books written by Mr. Humpries to do with Native American people/stories from the Native American's perspective. His art work via this site is very good also. Thanks for sharing all of this.

You have a beautiful site. I was looking for the name Shurke. We had always heard that we had an Native American for an ancestor. I am having some DNA testing done to see. I think maybe the Cornplanter Tribe. Early results show a 36% chance. This is very exciting. The Haplogroup B moved thru Asia to the Americas 20,000 to 60,000 years ago.

A most interesting web site. Very well done. White men could only be this cruel to a people through a "legitimate" government promoting their own self interests. This was worse than the segregation issue with the blacks. Political or financial power is the only way to establish oneself in this society. JRH

I enjoy your web site greatly. Ever since I spent some time serving on mission for my church back in 1983 I have grown closer to your people. During the time I served I was invited to a traditional Lakota burial ceremony by the Husband of the deceased family member....Marjorie Two-Bulls gave me a Traditional Star Quilt when I served in Rapid City near the end of my Mission. You are a great people. I wish I could have spent more time in learning from you. Continue to teach your children the ways of your ancestors. There are many here who I associate with, know the struggles the people have gone through and are continuing to go through.Be strong you are not forgotten.

I have also practice many things. Only today I found this web site. It is a pity but now I will visit it every day. It seems it is the best what I have found on the web about this item with many good ideas for working with my boys. You have a lot of supporters also in the other countries and many lonely "indians"who do not use this word without need. Good luck!

All-in-all an excellent web site. It is listed in my favorites and refer to it frequently. My only criticism is the moving directory elevator on the left that follows everywhere I go and drives me absolutely up the wall. I've tried to get rid of it but can't. That said, there's just too many good items and links to complement them all. My father was born on the Sac and Fox reservation in Oklahoma.

Mii-gwetch. I came to a new job at Sheridan, Wyoming. My first day I drove out on Hwy. 14 towards the BIG HORNS. Suddenly I felt what it must have been like to ride a horse freely across the plains that were in my view. I suddenly felt a bit of sorrow for those who used to live here although I had no idea who exactly they were and for myself because I could not have this experience of such freedom. So begins my journey to know them. I am grateful for web sites like this one. One can t know what American is without this history

I enjoyed searching the site. It is very important that there are people who keep their national identification. I also read Bury my heart at wounded knee. It is so strange to me that the nation whose history is the history of genocide of the native population is trying to teach the world democracy. The Russians, especially the Cossacks, settled the vast Sibiria region, even Alaska, but were mostly friendly with the local nations. They set up trade and helped each other. As far as I know the French kept the same policy in America. These examples could help American Government compensate for the crimes of the past.

I have more respect for the Greats Chiefs then my own presidents. We could sure used Chief Joseph and Chief Sitting Bull and Chief John Ross of the Cherokee in todays times. They would be better than whats running now. go with love...the Far Rider

A wonderful site. At the moment I'm reading a book called Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee.... An Indian History of the American West...1860/1890.. years of broken promises, disillusionment, war and massacre. A book which the New York Times describes as "Impossible to put down" I am Irish, and I leave you with an irish blessing.. "Go n-eiri an bothar libh"-May the road rise to meet you...May the wind be always at you back...May the sun shine warm upon your face...And rain fall soft upon your fields... And until we meet again May God hold you in the hollow of his hand....

Your web site is great I have not been to a pow wow but I plan on going this year in Austin.I am in thr process of reading a book called "Ride the Wind." The main character is Cynthia Ann Parker, the mother of Quannah Parker. I am saddened to learn the way of life for the Commanche has changed so much. I know the Commanche (The People) have pride in their heritage and their ancestors and rightly so, and hopefully that will never change. Thank you Steve.

To Spotted Wolf, Stone Woman & the Spirit of Snow Owl: I have always admired the fire and determination of Native American people to gain recognition of YOUR place in YOUR country. Since I was a child, and that was many years ago, I have read about your struggles and the persecution you have endured. In my many travels through the USA, I have indulged my fascination by trying to meet as many of the REAL people of America. Whereever I went I was always welcomed. One truly beautiful old Navajo lady told me that I spoke good English for a foreigner. We sat and talked for hours and when I left she gave me an exquisite silver and turquoise necklace she was wearing. It is something I treasure but what I treasure most of all was that she told me that in my heart I was Navajo. I will be returning to this site often. Walk in peace.

I enjoy reading your columns and learning about Cherokee culture and stories. I am in the strenuous process of researching my Native American heritage. My maternal great grandparents are both of Cherokee heritage. My gr grandfather was born in Georgia and my gr grandmother in Missouri and I am trying to trace her parents whom were from the family line of those whom survived the Trail of Tears. I wish I was 100% Cherokee but I am not so I have an identity crisis. I feel restless until I can trace my Native American ancestors whom do not have a European name!

I really enjoyed this site... I grew up in Trail and spent my youth wandering up and down the Columbia river between Trail and Castlegar fishing this incredible river. My friends and I spent our youth exploring the mountains, lakes and streams in this area. I don't know if I can find it, but I was given an old photo of a group of first nation people drying fish - I presume salmon - on a wood-like structure that resembled a large triangular shaped rake..Thank you... the photos were great by the way.

There are some of us who would like to see our modern world embrace many of the traditions and ways of the Native Americans. There are some of us who still carry the burden of guilt for the dreadful ways that our compatriots have treated the NA's. There are some of us who still have the highest respect for NA's, and whose initial interest has grown into admiration for still-proud peoples. And there is at least one of us who has been touched by the spirits of the Shoshone whilst visiting their territory recently - it saved my life. You have an excellent web site here, but better than that it has enriched my day by being able to touch it. Thanks

Greetings,...The Native American Culture and that of the indigenious folks worldwide, has always fascinated me.I have devoted a considerable amount of time,in doing online research,to educate myself, and collate a database of some very educational sites such as this one, catering to native American History..Neither am i a Native American,or an "American",However that fact has not prevented me from such knowledge quests.I am of the opinion that if all cultures would seek ways in showing how we all might be related, then maybe we would not have so much anger and animosity towards fellow human beings..Wishfull thinking, however maybe a not too distant reality....Nomana Magali Barrow.~~Norman Michael Barrow

+Si'-Yo'. Came across your website by accident. My respects to Snow Owl and all those affiliated with this site. I am from one of those unfortunate contemporary bloodlines who have forgotten their history. Only in the last few years have I begun to uncover that which has been lost to my family for 4 generations. Thank you all for keeping alive the philosophies of the "real people." History will look back on these last 500 years as the most gruesome in the annals of man. A return to the "natural peoples" way of life is inevitable. The spirit of the Creator has manifested in individuals throughout time. QuetzeQuadal (sp?), the Pale One, The Peacekeeper, Jesus Christ, Black Elk's Vision, and even Ben Franklin remind us all that we are indeed but a single part of the whole which is interconnected and who are interrelated. What befalls the one ultimately befalls the many. Could we, like the wise elders have advised for centuries, but walk the face of our Mother with an eye to the 7th generation to come, balance and harmony could be achieved. Balance will return. It is the natural order and is unstoppable. A new awareness is already evident. Global warming is finally recognized universally by scientists and world governments. I see a world where my grandchildren's grandchildren live peacefully, side by side, with their neighbors-A world where countries do the same. And it is the spirit of the "real" or "natural people" which shall prevail. Wado

My White name is Don J Elder, but my name by Ancestors is Don Twobears. I am the first born son of the Shaman of the De'naina people and the Black Raven Clan. Just wanted to say that I enjoy your site. My Mother was a good Friend with a Moose and a Big Brown Bear when she was young. I remember the stories she told of the Bear, I think maybe He was a little of the Raven too. Not sure. I have since given my Mother to the Spirits and I miss her, but all is well in my Heart for her. Thank you for some of the stories, they seem to match somke of the ones that I was told, like Ahneah the Rose Flower. I have two Daughters, very beautiful. My first is Brandy and the closest to my heart is Kimberly Chenoa, the sun of my Mornings. Kimberly has one son Donovan Jolon and is expecting my Grand-Daughter soon, maybe in July. I dreamed of Ahneah, I think because of the story here. I have decided to call my Grand-Daughter Aspen Ahneah, I hope this is okay with you. Thank you for the dream.

I just happened upon your web site this morning as I was searching for a children's art project. Currently at the Phippen Museum for Western Art the exhibit is "Myths and Ledgends of the Native American." Twelve Native American artists submitted work. The exhibit is supplemented by pieces from the museums permenant collection. The docents are creating a small project for young viewers. We choose to have them create a shield. Your informational site has been very helpful to me...Thank you

To whom it may concern, I did'nt know until for about an hour ago at the people who live to the far north are called Inuit, I always thought they were called Eskimos, until I saw a flim, and that arouse my curiosity and, then I went on the internet. My grand mother is a descendant from the Cherokee tribe, I was born in England but have travelled quite alot and, now I am living in Sweden, but I am always interested in learning about some new culture or language.

Originally from Montana. When I was younger, I spent summers visiting places like "The Madison Buffalo Jump," "The Big Hole" and "Custer's Battlefield." I was always intrigued and more than perplexed by what went on during that era. I'm a graduate sociology course requiring a paper on Cultures; which, thanks to the web, brought me to your site through some ideas I had. My research deals with culture-disappearance and degradation through cultural-impedence. This led me to the current tribes of the world and back home to the Sioux....Thank you for the information on your site; like being a kid again.
