Comments: Shaman is a fine word for a Native American Medicine man. The great Lakota Black Elk refers to himself as a Shaman. Yes, it comes from the people of Siberia, but it is also a term used today to describe medicine men/women. A Shaman does the same thing a Medicine man does. The names are interchangeable

I am trying to trace her heritage - so many folks ask me if I am Native American, but, I cannot answer for sure because my parents are deceased. I found your web site while I was searching. I love the fry bread recipe

Comments: It was very interesting to read about the too-often tragic history of such a strong and remarkable people, much of whose culture we in the U.S. would benefit by greatly today...As a soldier, I lived for a time (many years ago) in Dahlonega, GA, some of the beautiful ancestral land that was taken away from its original owners, and have many fond memories of that place. I was also born at Fort Benning in Georgia while my father was a soldier training there...This is a wonderful web site, and I will spend more time reading and imagining what joy and appreciation for life must have filled the hearts of those who lived in villages so long ago...And I will ask myself, as I have a million times before, how can mankind be so clever and inventive, and yet so stupid and cruel?

I believe that it is carved out turtle shell. I am very interested to find out what it may be.I had found it where I know to be a former tribal summer fishing ground on northern cape.any Ideas?

Comments: Hello..I read the article about the eagle feathers and what they represent. I think it is awful that you are required to have a dang permit in order to obtain and/or possess any. You all are the true owners of this land and still to this day, people interfere with your living and ways of life. it makes me very angry that they treat you this way. I suppose you have to live with the laws governing this country but it sure don't make it right. I am not a native Indian but I sorta wish I could be so at least in spirit if nothing else. I like the way you all try to live with your customs and your own laws and the way your people exist. I would much rather live the ways of your people than the ways these others do. makes more sense to me. Besides you all appreciate what the land gives you and this place would most likely not be so polluted or trashed for dang sure. Well I feed my birds that I love so much especially my hummingbirds that come to me and seek me out. I have had them stare at me eyeball to eyeball as they hover close to me looking at me. They might be small but they are the bravest hearts...I tend my gardens that are grown with only compost and the soil. I do have some modern conveniences, but then I seek to go out in the wild at times, to go camping and next to nature and the quietness, except for just nature. So much better. I know how to sit quietly so the animals do not feel threatened by my presence and they come up close to me. I don't know why but when I play my flute and sing, or play my guitar they seem to be curious and even to enjoy that. I have noted this several times. Especially if it is soothing and nice...I wish to thank you for allowing me to come here and reading all this wonderful information you have provided.,,Thank you and many wonderful happy days and peaceful nights to you...Sincerely,Jeannie (Rapax = Tawny Eagle, Sareun = veritable bird)

I feel like i belong in your world, but for now my dreams will have to be the closest i get...I often dream of a native indian man, and also a brown horse. I have also dreamed of a pure white owl, and a pure white horse, who both told me they loved me. I have a feeling they are my spirit animals, and your site has helped me understand them...Once again, thank you

And I thought that you had a hard time with the Pawnees and the US Army. I think that your people were amazingly adapted to harsh environment and politics. It is amazing that your people have survived and I admire that. I am Nicolai and I am just a kid of Russian and American heritage. Also I think native American culture contains very important keys to understanding our destiny...They tapped into the Great Spirit like very few – I am form Africa so I also o\know this great and wonderful continent – can you imagine what the US was like when it was just populated by the indigenous people?? Amazing..My lady is 27 years younger than me so I am also very blessed....Greetings...Rain In The Face -- Kevin from Cape Town

Comments: Thank you for such a fascinating page, I found the page while looking for my ancestry and what tribe would have been in the Trois Riviere area as my Mama told me in passing that my grandmother was from that area, with the name Helene LeLievre...What I didn't imagine was the history of the area of the time to be so intertwined and it would be my guess I would be Algonquin...I can appreciate all the many hours and love put into the accumuliating of all this valued information...Many Thanks and Blessings, Lola;~}
